We Believe in Possibility: Five Years Later

When Naphtali first joined the Trinity Afterschool Program, she didn’t know how to read. Within months of joining the program, “something clicked.” Now, a sixth grade student at Jason Lee, Naphtali’s Mom says she has “the world at her feet.”

When you believe in the possibly futures for the people in your community, you can be a part of something life changing. Listen in to a story from TAP Graduate Naphtali, and her mom, Nanette. Transcript below.

Naphtali [reading]: “No one ever came to jolly Robin’s help in time of need, and went away again with an empty fist.”

Nanette: Naphtali was in the first grade at Bryant Montessori and her teacher nominated her to go to TAP.

Words on screen: The Trinity Afterschool Program provides literacy tutoring to first graders from Bryant Montessori just like Naphtali was, five years ago.

Nanette: Yeah, well we thought, ‘well this is nice, she can go and maybe learn to read a little bit.”

Naphtali: I had a lot of friends who could read, but I really didn’t know how to at all. That was kind of stressful.

Nanette: And I, I was concerned because I really didn’t know how to teach her to read. She was about three or four months into it and something just really clicked.

Naphtali: I remember going to the office and her telling me I was doing really good.

Nanette: Her reading is, I believe, like four grade levels ahead. Like, she reads aloud to me often because she enjoys it so much. And she is such a beautiful reader. And it’s because of TAP!

Not knowing how to read and being in high school and everything is so difficult. That’s how I was, you know. So know I feel like she’s got the world at her feet because she’s such a great reader.
