We Believe in Place: Deeply Investing Here

The Bryant Neighborhood Center believes in place.

Built on the corner of South 6th and Grant over 125 years ago, we’ve intentionally developed deep roots, building partnerships with neighborhood schools, relationships with local foundations, and trust with our neighbors. The programs we provide come from the voices of the neighborhood.

This commitment has been thoughtfully expressed by Skylar Cole, former Trinity AmeriCorps and Learning Center Coordinator. When asked to reflect on what she learned during her service, Skylar shared:

“I learned the importance of staying in a community over time. Some of the relationships I garnered through AmeriCorps are the most significant ones that I have- youth and adult. I left and then chose to return to Tacoma to be nearer to their perspectives. Slowly (but surely!) I am working towards working in this community again. I also learned the value of deeply investing in the people you work with. Trinity is a very special place. All the the staff bring unique perspectives and beliefs, and remain open to each other.”

More recently, Skylar has voiced her enthusiastic support for the upcoming Bryant Neighborhood Center.

Words cannot express how excited I am about the coming Bryant Neighborhood Center. The Learning Center was my AmeriCorps placement straight out of college, is truly the foundation of Tacoma being my home, and is how I found myself by serving kids. "Place" is THE essential value for Trinity and all of their programs. In everything Trinity has on offer. there is evidence that having a consistent place to go- to be read to in T.A.P, to play basketball and find your mentor in the Learning Center, to have soup each Friday in Tony's Kitchen, and on and on. To have a place and people in this world is essential. I didn't grow up in a community with such a centralized hub for resources and relationships, but I sure want to live in one.

Trinity Presbyterian has been a more than ample host for the neighborhood, but the building's retrofit and expansion into the Center are critical to keep-a-going and bring more resources to our corner of paradise. Please consider a donation to the Here For Good fund for the Bryant Neighborhood Center.”
